Apart from letting the world know how you feel inside, facial expressions can also influence your power to perceive written language that may relate to emotions. The fact is based on the results of a research that would soon be available to the interested readers in the journal Psychological Science. Around 40 people were treated with botulinum which was used to make the muscles that cause frowning in the forehead inactive.
Human emotions and thoughts which are expressed through facial expression have always been a reason for intrigue for many scientists over the years and through this study, scientists have found a way to cause changes in the emotions of a person by blocking his ability to move the body.
However, the test that was carried out on some people also resulted in certain cases of temporary paralysis. David Havas who is the first author of the study and also a psychology Ph.D. candidate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison asked his patients to read statements before and after they were treated with botox.
It was done in an attempt to test how the comprehension of language in these individuals was affected by blocking their frown. He found out that people did take some extra time to read sentences which were related to emotions and there was also a difference in time required for reading a happy and sad sentence.
The study is set to have a deep implication in the field of cosmetic surgery. It also indicates that understanding in an individual can be disturbed if there is an interruption in his peripheral bodily mechanism.
