Well chatting with your friend is the safest way as you are relaxed and comfortable. Talking to a stranger is more challenging. But recent surveys indicate some positive effects as a result of the effort that you put while talking to strangers.

Well according to a research carried out there were participants interacting with their partner whom they were in long term relationship and same participants interacting with opposite sex strangers. It was found that participants had more fun talking to the strangers than when they talked to their partners. Further the participants were told to make an effort with their partners and the result improved. Hence it was proved that making an effort makes a difference.
